Blackberry Boursin Grilled Cheese is a flavorful melty sandwich made with creamy, Boursin cheese, sweet blackberry jam, and Fontina cheese nestled between thick slices of buttery, toasty bread. The herby flavor in Boursin cheese, which has a similar consistency to goat cheese, lends a savory note to this sweet, gourmet-style grilled cheese.
"Gour-met" I introduce you to Boursin cheese? Oh boy, see what I did there? Bad dad joke alert!
But seriously folks, I am not normally a fan of flavored cheese, but this Boursin cheese hits differently. It's creamy, herby, with a touch of garlic (they have other flavors too), and it spreads like a dream.
And jam in sandwiches is my jam! Just like this fig and pear grilled cheese, the blackberry jam adds brightness, a pop of color, and sweet citrusy notes. I added a mild fontina because- well cheese- and because I still need a good melty cheese-pull in my fancy sandwiches.

Why you will love this blackberry grilled cheese
- It uses store-bought ingredients. No fancy jam making or pot stirring here. You can use your favorite blackberry jam. It's the perfect time to use up that seasonal jam you bought at the farmer's market!
- Takes less than ten minutes to prepare. All you have to do is spread, shred, grill, and serve.
- It's fancy. She's sweet, she's savory, she's just fancy. It will look and taste like you were slaving away all day.
- Customizable. Although I use the "Garlic and Fine Herbs" variety of Boursin, you can swap it out for other flavors, and even change up the jams.
What is Boursin cheese?
Boursin cheese is a soft, creamy cheese originating from France. It is characterized by its rich and creamy texture, which is achieved through a blend of cream cheese, herbs, and spices.
It is commonly used as a spread for crackers, bread, or vegetables, and it can also be incorporated into various dishes such as pasta, salads, and appetizers and of course-grilled cheese!
Ingredients
Here is what you will need to make blackberry Boursin grilled cheese.
- Bread- Choose a thick crusty bread such as sourdough, multigrain or an artisan style bread.
- Blackberry jam- To make this simple and ready to eat right away- I use store-bought blackberry jam or preserves. Choose a good one, and by "good" I mean one where the blackberries shine through and it's not too sugary. My go-to jams are from Bonne Mamam. You can choose a jam with or without seeds.
- Boursin cheese-I used the "Garlic and Fine Herbs" variety, but you can experiment with other flavors.
- Fontina- This mild cheese gets nice and gooey-melty in the middle, typical of grilled cheese, and pairs perfectly with the Boursin.
- Butter- For grilling the sandwich. Use salted butter to balance out the sweet.
See the recipe card for quantities.
Equipment
You will need a non-stick pan or skillet to grill the sandwich.
Step by step
Making a gourmet grilled cheese with blackberry jam is as easy as shredding, spreading, and grilling! See below how to layer your blackberry Boursin grilled cheese so that it melts to perfection!
Start by spreading the Boursin cheese on all four slices of bread.
Next, on two slices of bread, spread the blackberry jam, then pile the fontina on top.
Top with the remaining bread and grill in a buttered pan until golden brown on both sides.
💡Expert tip
For the best-grilled cheese sandwiches, butter your pan- not your sandwiches. This ensures that the bread really soaks up the butter flavor and cooks up evenly.
Variations
- Blackberry Jam: Play around with different jams. My husband hates seeded jams, so I opt to make his with apricot jam, and it's just as delicious. Fig, blueberry, and strawberry jam are all great stand-ins.
- Bacon: Feel free to add bacon for extra flavor.
- Boursin cheese: Try different flavors of Boursin cheese, such as their "Caramelized Onion" or "Bacon and Chive" varieties. You can also substitute a flavored goat cheese for the Boursin. Opt for savory flavored cheese as opposed to sweet, since the blackberries already lend a sweetness to the grilled cheese.
- Fontina: Instead of the fontina, you can use another melty cheese such as gruyere or even mozzarella.
What to serve Boursin grilled cheese
I can't imagine your taste buds will need anything more than this dreamy sandwich, but feel free to pair it with some lighter fare for a complete meal.
- Fresh fruit: Serve with a bowl of fresh fruit. Fresh blackberries are the obvious choice but choose your favorite.
- Salad: Since this cheesy sandwich can be a bit filling, serve it alongside a simple green salad dressed with a light vinaigrette.
- Bubbly drink: Need something bubbly to guzzle down while you devour your sandwich? My Espresso Soda is the perfect refreshing pick-me-up.
Storage
This blackberry Boursin grilled cheese is best eaten right away. If you have any leftovers (doubtful), then you can reheat it by placing it in a 350°F oven for 10-15 minutes until heated through. You can also use your toaster oven to reheat them. I would avoid using the microwave as the bread will get very mushy.
FAQ
Yes! To ensure even distribution and melting, shred your cheese rather than slicing it.
Soft cheeses such as fontina or mozzarella, can get stuck in your shredder holes. To avoid the cheese being too soft to shred, pop the cheese in the freezer for 10 minutes, then shred.

Wow. I don't think I'd ever had Boursin but I picked it up at the market and made this and all I can say is YUM! I did sub out Apricot for Blackberry Jam (don't ask, husband has a weird thing against seeds in jam) and it was perfect. Thank you for this recipe love love love!
