This cantaloupe lime agua fresca is inspired by the traditional Mexican fruit drink known for blending fresh fruit, water, and a touch of sugar. This version combines juicy cantaloupe, fresh lime juice, and water for a light, naturally fruity drink that's perfect for summer brunches, barbecues, and warm afternoons.

Agua fresca is a traditional fruit drink in Mexico and literally translates to "fresh water". This non-alcoholic drink uses fresh fruit and is usually mixed with water, sugar, and other fruits. Here, I paired cantaloupe and lime for a sweet, tropical vibe.

This easy cantaloupe summer drink comes together in minutes and can be made ahead, doubled, and served to a crowd. It makes the perfect brunch drink. And that color? Oh, so pretty!

👩‍🍳Expert tips for choosing a ripe cantaloupe

  • Look for a golden-tan color rather than green skin.
  • There should be a sweet, fragrant smell at the stem's end.
  • Choose a melon that feels heavy for its size.
  • Avoid melons with soft spots or bruising.
  • Head to the farmers' market to snag the best in-season cantaloupes. They're picked at their peak ripeness.

Variations

  • Make it sparkling. Replace some of the water with sparkling water right before serving.
  • Add herbs. Fresh mint or basil pairs beautifully with cantaloupe.
  • Make it spicy. Add a small pinch of Tajín or a thin slice of jalapeño for a sweet-and-spicy version.
  • Make it boozy. Add tequila, rum, or vodka for an adult summer cocktail.

Storage

Store leftover cantaloupe agua fresca in a covered pitcher or airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Since the blended fruit can naturally settle, give it a good stir before serving. For the best flavor and texture, serve it well chilled over ice.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to strain cantaloupe agua fresca?

Nope. While straining will produce a smoother drink, it's not needed.

Can I make agua fresca ahead of time?

Yes. Store it covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Stir before serving because the fruit pulp may settle.

Can I use another melon?

Absolutely! Watermelon (both red and yellow) or honeydew is delicious.
